Must-watch movies that will complete your sobriety

It can be extremely helpful for your sobriety to search for the best inspiration in the media. Music can lift our mood, and movies have plenty of guidance and tools to help you get sober. Some films can remind you to stay kind, humble and emotionally alive. The story line of a movie that features the topics of addiction and alcoholism can be an essential reminder to you about where a relapse will take you or, if you are working your way towards sobriety, it can keep the certainty of what will happen to you if you continue to use in mind.

Here are some great movies to consider watching as a way of keeping you on the path to sobriety:

Trainspotting

If heroin is your drug of choices, this movie is as real as it gets. This movie was directed by Danny Boyle, and stars Ewan McGregor and Johnny Lee Miller. The movie portray a terrifying drug addiction and shows a great example of the hardships that drug abuse brings. The movie conveys life, withdrawal, relapse, death and consequences of addiction. The movie is brutal but sometimes funny and has its own quotes and wisecracks that can be used as references in your own existence.

Gia

This is a biographical film about the life of model Gia Marie Carangi who played by Angelina Jolie. It is a movie that reminds us that drug addiction does not discriminate. Whether you are famous, beautiful or a homeless person on the street, you can still suffer from the pain and effects of addiction. The movie only scratches the surface of addiction because it centers more Gia’s life, but it is a sensitive roller coaster that depicts how quickly drug addiction can destroy your life.

Requiem for a Dream

The movie portrays the raw reality of drug abuse. Starring Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly, it is a great well-written film that can be nerve-wracking and distressing to watch. If you have experienced the extremity of addiction, you’ll find yourself knowing what’s going to take place next because the movie offers the characters real life choices as to what to do when they are desperate to get high. The movie does not have a happy ending and it leaves you with a dreadful, empty feeling in your stomach.

Blow

Another biographical movie based on the life of the drug smuggler George Jung starring Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp. It is a captivating and excellent movie that portrays the effects of cocaine addiction, and also the experience of being on the other side of the equation as a drug supplier or dealer. Even though the film portrays the characters on their ‘pink cloud’, their dreams are quickly ruined by the reality of being desperate, broke and depressed.

Several movies seem harder to watch because of the consequences and the effects they may have on our emotion. The movies can provide an external source, not only for entertainment, but for tools and real-life circumstances that are easy to relate to and may help give advice that you didn’t know you we’re looking for. Though some of these films may not end happily, it good to be grateful when you turn the movie off and realize that isn’t your existence anymore.
